A4988 Stepper Motor Driver

The A4988 Stepper Motor Driver is a microstepping bipolar stepper motor driver capable of up to 1/16 microstepping. It provides smooth, precise motion control for 3D printers, CNC machines, and positioning systems.

Important Notes

  • CRITICAL: Adjust current limit BEFORE connecting motor – measure Vref
  • Formula: Current Limit = Vref × 2.5 (for standard 0.05Ω sense resistors)
  • Heatsink + fan REQUIRED for currents above 1A
  • Enable pin is active LOW – leave disconnected to enable
  • Do not disconnect motor while powered – will destroy driver
  • MS1, MS2, MS3 pins set microstep resolution (see datasheet)
